LONGING FOR PUTRAJAYA
2012
Banquet Table
45 cm x 180 cm x 90 cm
“This is the reason why a Chinese can’t be prime minister in Malaysia”
Longing for Putrajaya is a playful provocation of the male ego through a curious table. Putrajaya is a planned city located south of Kuala Lumpur, and is now the federal administration centre of the Malaysian government. Building began in the early 1990’s and the project was the brainchild of Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, who was then Prime Minister. In Bahasa Malaysia putra means ‘prince’ and ‘jaya’ success; the area as such, is filled with grand public buildings and monuments, as well as the official office and residence of the Prime Minister. Emerging artist, chi too takes a simple folding table and prints a type of ruler on the surface that teases one to measure who has biggest ego in the race for power.
